Client Profile
Management Board Secretariat (MBS)
is the prime provider of information technology services to ministries,
agencies, boards and commissions of the Government of Ontario.
The services that MBS provides / manages include the corporate networks (voice and data services), corporate application services and both shared and dedicated computer processing services.
As part of its mandate, MBS provides internet hosting and search engine services to a wide
variety of Ontario Government web sites. Many other Ontario Government web
sites are managed or hosted by the individual ministries or agencies themselves.
iSERV ONTARIO, a unit of MBS, performs central administration of the
enterprise search engine and is responsible for the interface
to the consolidated search index of all Government of Ontario holdings.
Individual Ministry webmasters are responsible for search interfaces to documents
on their own website.
There are over 100 public facing and intranet web sites containing over 1 million documents.
At least 20 million hits, representing about 1 million users, are received per month. It is
projected that these figures will rapidly increase over the next five years.
The Business Challenge
The publicly stated guideline regarding the overall business challenge was to
"Enable seamless and integrated service delivery accross program lines
to meet client needs; and build connections to related services provided by others"
For the team managing the enterprise search facility this meant provision of a single
point of access to all information located in any of over 100 Ontario Public Service
(OPS) websites.
Internal users have the additional requirement for secure search and retrieval of information
that may reside in databases, policy manuals, email databases or intranet websites.
A new generation of search engine was required to meet current demands and is scalable
and robust enough to accommodate anticiapted growth.
Among the stated mandatory requirements for selecting the winner product included:
- Scalability: to meet anticipated rapid growth.
- Performance:sub-second search response times.
- Reliability:proven in tough production environments.
- Relevant search results:advanced search analysis, configurable rank tuning.
- Distributed administration: to allow subject matter experts to manage their components
- Multi lingual support:French, English, Spenish, German advanced linguistics analysis.
ACIS & FAST Solution
ACIS Consulting partnered with Fast Search & Transfer to form a unified team of
experts that provided a total solution.
FAST Data Search was installed at client site along with distributed admin function developed by
ACIS Consulting to meet custom requirements.
ACIS Consulting also provided consulting services to
help assure the success of the implementation team.
The project was successfully implemented in a short period of time.
Users can now enjoy a much enhanced search experience.
